Awkward Classes and India’s Rural Development

Marx’s model of capital and labour, dynamised by contradictions the compulsion to accumulate, leaves deviations from polar classes labour ignored, regarded as precapitalist outliers, or headed for extinction. But two considered here, petty commodity production (and trade services) merchant’s commercial capital, persist widely. Here in tribute major contributions political economy Utsa Patnaik Prabhat Patnaik, their structure dynamics are discussed general contemporary Indian case. They argued be awkward both analytically politically. Petty overlaps with wage small capitalist firms; it reproduces expands multiplication, not accumulation; does mobilise a politically coherent way.
